One of the most popular products for Hillsigns are handmade window boxes with a personalised engraving. All the parts are made from re-purposed wood. Planed, cut and sanded before assembly. An exterior grade adhesive is used and all the joints are screwed for additional strength
A top edge trim is made using a router which is clamped to the window box as shown on the left.
The engraving is made to each customer's specification. Things such as "David's Garden" or "With Love From Mum" and so on. The boxes are either 30 or 60cm long but any reasonable size can be made.
The ends are also glued and clamped and then sanded to make a perfect finish as in the pictures below.
A small handle is then added to each end which bridges between the sides and the end piece. This add more strength to withstand the constant wet and then dry conditions that these boxes experience which can cause swelling and contraction.
Finally the boxes are coated in Danish Oil and a cloth liner fitted to protect the wood from direct contact with the compost. The end result is an indoor garden that will look beautiful and be totally unique to each customer.
