My customer had a caravan she wanted to hide from her neighbours in Oxford and decided to grow Russian Vine, otherwise know as Mile-a-Minute! To achieve this she sent me the dimensions of the wall and over the course of a Whatsapp conversation I designed the planters she would need. Each planter would be 165cm long with a 5cm gap between each. I decided they need to be deeper than usual at 30cm and about 25cm deep.
Given the size the planter would be filed with over 120l of compost and once soaked in water the total weight would exceed 100kg. So I fitted a midway brace to hold the front of the planter firmly to the back which in turn is mounted to the wall ofcourse.
The planters were coated with anti-fungal and a preservative oil as usual. I then delivered to site and fitted them as per the customers instructions.
These planters have a J shaped aluminium rail securely bolted to the back. I then fix the same type of rail to the wall but inverted. See picture below left.
Beneath the rail are adjustable bolts which all me to level up the planters and ensure the base of the planter is resting against the wall to help spread the load.
Finally I hooked each planter to their respective rails.
The customer is now going to add compost and plants. I am looking forward to seeing the end result.
A video of the planters is shown below.
