A Slice of Cherry - Making a House Number

Having been cut down 2 years ago here at Hillsigns, and allowed to slowly dry under cover, this 20 or 21 year old cherry is ready to slice to make a new sign for a customer. I usually use a petrol driven chain saw but this electric B&D chainsaw is easier to control, lighter and less aggressive. By securing the wood to the bench rather inelegantly with plywood and screws it is ready to slice. I cut the wood by eye trying to get a close to an even 30mm thick slice as possible. I want to leave the bark intact right through to the finished item.

The wood is very hard, easy to cut and once revealed shows a light, pale wood with a darker core and very distinct growth rings. The wood is nice and dry to the touch.

I've made a slight, unnecessary notch with the chain saw on one side. That will be fine as the back, but the front surface must be perfect. It is.

Next the sanding.
